It's a confluence, two deserts colliding to form a landscape replete with oddity. The “trees” are the namesake, the centerpiece, but really only a welcoming biomass to the park's other wonders. I go for the rocks.
My favorite is the Hall of Horrors, scrambling in and amongst the cracks, forgotten between boulders, and somehow always emerging to a summit of panoramic views. It's dangerous. I should have gotten hurt by now. But you forget about the threat, about falling, because this place turns you back into a child. Curiosity becomes your only concern.
Joshua Tree is ancestral lands to the Pinto Culture, and the Serrano, Chemehuevi, and Cahuilla Tribes.
